Survivors

Eight illustrated biographies of survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Seven Jewish survivors and one non-Jewish survivor have actively collaborated on the realisation of these testimonies: Hans Beckman, Leny Boeken-Velleman, Ronnie Goldstein-van Cleef, Bill Minco, Fia Polak, Flora Schrijver, Fred Schwarz, and Ernst Verduin. These biographies were compiled by Carry van Lakerveld based on interviews and literature.
OverAbove each biography there are photos of family members, grandparents, father, mother, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins who did not survive the camps. Some frames do not have a portrait, but only a name, date of birth and date of death. Many Jewish survivors do not even have a single photo of family and friends; these disappeared when their houses were robbed. Most of the people who were deported took photos with them. Upon arrival in Birkenau all their belongings were confiscated. These were sorted in a special department of the camp, which was called Canada. Hundreds of thousands of photos were found and burned.
Most of the survivors who returned home discovered that most of their family members had been murdered.
